Azienda Agricola Virna di Borgogno Virna – a family-run winery from Piedmonte, from the Lange zone, located in the center of this charming place, namely in Barolo.  The Borgogno family had vineyards and managed with grapegrowing already in 1720. In 1950 one of the family members, Lodovico, personally made great efforts to develop the company, he bought new vineyards and built new winery. His daughter Virna also inherited passion for grapegrowing . She has a place in the history of Italian winemaking, because as the first women in Italy got the title of enologue. She graduated the Enological Institute of Alba, becoming a Master of Enology Technique. Solid knowledge, passion and involvement in working by the side of her father enabled her to perfect the art of making quality wines, especially Barolos. In 2001 she became the owner of family’s vineyards, and along with her sister Ivana have been successfully running the company. Azienda Agricola Virna has 12 hectares of vineyards, of which 8 hectares grown with Barolo in the towns of Barolo, Novello  and Monforte d’Alba. A few of them belong to the historic Crus of this appellation: Cannubi, Preda, Sarmassa, I Merli, San Giovanni, Costa delle rose. Apart from perfect Barolos here also are made Dolcetto, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Arneis and Langhe Nebbiolo, and an original blend of Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo called “Le Sorelle”, Italian for Sisters. About 65 000 bottles of wine is produced every year.

Great care is given to all the stages of grapegrowing, processing in the winery and ageing in  oak barrels. The aim of Virna and her coworkers is to provide the customer always with  “good” wine with honest quality price ratio. Every bottle of great Barolo or nice Dolcetto is the result of women’s care to the details and great love for the place, which they come from.

A dry wine made from native Piedmont grape Nebbiolo, with Lampia and Michet varieties. Cannubi is one of the most famous appellations of Barolo. Virna has there a small vineyard which gives this great wine. The quality of wines from this zone is the result of two different soils, that is grey-blueish loams, marls rich in calcium compounds (formed between 10 and 7 million years BC), yellowish sandstones (so called sandstones from Diano formed 9 million years BC) and layers of grey sand alternated. Cannubi has great potential and elegance, for which is praised by experts of Barolo. A long and careful making of Barolo from Cannubi consist in ageing for 18 months in French oak casks and 6 months in the bottle. Finesse, harmony and noble origin, all this Cannubi has.

A dry red wine made from native Piedmont grape Nebbiolo, from Lampia and Michet varieties. Originating from Virna’s best vineyards: La Preda and Cannubi Boschis from around Barolo, Cerviano Merli and Sottocastello di Novello near the town Novello. Riserva is made only for best vintages, which can guarantee longevity of wine, and the year 2010 certainly was one of the best. Careful selection of grapes and long processing of this wine consist in its ageing. First the wine from single vineyards matures in big Slovenian oak casks and French oak tonneaux of 300 to 500 liters. After that 3000 liters of wine is selected to combine with the wine coming from single crus, and such blend ages for next 12 to18 months in a barrel of 3000 liters. This way is obtained an outstanding Riserva for special occasions or to meditate with.
