informations about producer

Cantolio Cantine del Primitivo di Manduria, a wine cooperative founded in 1960 by a small group of winegrowers, owners of small vineyards located around the town of Manduria, in the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi. They wanted to be present in market in which strong and powerful wines with personality started to be appreciated and sought after, exactly like the ones delivered by their vineyards. Today, the company has 700 winemakers, that successfully follow the tradition of Primitivo di Manduria. Part of the vineyards, so-called “Marina”,  is located along the Ionic Sea, part is grown in the “alberello” style (short vines), exposed to the sun and sea winds – factors which  are favorable to grape growing. Starting from 2008 the entire production in Cantolio is done using electric energy obtained only from renewable sources, due to solar panels installation.

Apart from outstanding Primitivo awarded in wine competitions around the world, the company also makes excellent extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods of processing olives.

Very hospitable staff of the cooperative convinced us to discover their wines. Of course, wine quality and modern facilities are combined with many years’ tradition of winemaking. Each version of Cantolio’s Primitivo is unique, warm and authentic, without any addition that could obscure its distinctive features. Good wine from kind growers.

Dry red wine of the indigenous Primitivo di Manduria grape. An outstanding Primitivo beautifully called “Mare” or the Sea. The vineyards are located in the vicinity of the Ionic Sea, in the sandy soils alternating with the calcareous ones. It is a small area of land, where every work is done manually. The summer here is very hot and dry, with quite big day and night temperature differences, thanks to these factors the grapes contain a big potential of organic compounds – polyphenols. The presence of the sea makes the vine trees breath with salty air scenting of the Mediterranean Maquis. All these unique aromas are also present in the wine. The harvest is done early, until the middle of August, the wine after a short period of maturing in stainless steel ages for a few months in wood. Also “Mare” was awarded a gold medal in the competition Berliner Wine Trophy 2014 and received an award in Vinitaly 2014.

    Color: intense ruby red.

Aroma: notes of liquorice, forest fruit, vanilla.

    Flavor: warm, soft, velvety.

Food matching: excellent with ragout sauce, grilled meats and game, seasoned cheeses.

    Serving temperature: 16°/18°C.

    Alcohol content: 15%.

Dry red wine from the indigenous Primitivo di Manduria grape called “Terra”, the Italian for the Earth. The vineyards are located in the deep territory, on the so-called red soils, rich in potassium and iron and on the black ones full of humus and clay. The vines are cultivated in the ‘alberello’ style  (short  vine trees) typical for the south of Italy. The ‘alberello’ style makes the grapes in time get close to the earth, from which obtain nutritional components, warm and humidity. Around the vine is created a kind of hole, where water is collected. Many vine trees are more than 70 years old and still yield ripe grapes. That is why Primitivo Terra so delights by freshness, ripe fruit and rich structure. The harvest is done manually until the middle of September, after a short period of fermentation the wine ages in small French oak barrels. Excellent and elegant Primitivo justifiably won a gold medal in the competition World Wine 2014 in Brussels.

    Color: deep ruby red.

    Aroma: rich, complex, floral-fruity notes.

Flavor: warm, fresh, gently tannic, long-lasting.

Food matching: excellent with game and meats, seasoned cheeses.

    Serving temperature: 16°/18°C.
