Informations about region

Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region of northern Italy with an area of 7.844 km2. In the north borders Austria, in the east Slovenia and in the west the region of Veneto. Its landforms consist of mountains (more than 40%), plains (38%) and hills (almost 20%).

The region can be divided into two subregions, namely Friuli with the provinces of Udine and Pordenone and Venezia Giulia with the main province of Trieste. Vine has been known here since the XIII and XII centuries B.C. Pliny the Elder wrote that there were pleasant wines among which Pucinum, today called Prosecco. The Glera is a grape variety from which is produced this wine. The Glera, originating in Friuli in the environs of the town with the same name exactly, in the course of time reached the surroundings of Treviso, where today is the real wine making region of Prosecco.

In the written records of the Middle Ages mentioned are the Raibolia (Ribollia) from Istria and Collio, and also the Terrano, Pignolo, Picolit. These are only the most famous and cultivated up to today indigenous grape varieties, from which produced are unique wines. Worth mentioning are also an excellent Tocai called Friulano, an aromatic Sauvignon, a sweet Verduzzo and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, an extraordinarily crispy and full-bodied red wine.
